2024 Whitsunday Reef Preservation Project

During October to December 2024 the Marine Conservation Branch of our charity successfully completed a series of Coral Surveys in the Whitsunday Islands. Our research team included Team Leader and New Beginnings International President Ben Braeuer, Marine Biologist Kimberly Wong, and JCU intern Stephanie Cornish. What we found was that the variety and health of coral in the areas surveyed was surprisingly good, with evidence of some coral bleaching in isolated spots. An Executive Overview as well as a Detailed Report were prepared as part of the project. We expect to continue this highly important work in the Whitsundays, involving students involved in our Youth Marine Conservation Program as participants in these Citizen Science activities.
